Mark Carney is Canada’s Next Prime Minister, Replacing Justin Trudeau

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is set to succeed Justin Trudeau as Liberal Party leader and as the 24th Prime Minister in a sweeping victory.

Carney, who doesn’t have a seat in Parliament, secured an astounding 131,674 votes, which is 85.9% of the total. He beats former Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland, who came in second with a very considerable gap of 11,134 votes.

In his speech, he said, “I pledge to you, and to all Canadians, that I will work day and night with one purpose, which is to build a strong Canada for everyone.”

He immediately tackled Canada’s trade war with the US. Carney said, “My government will put into action our plan to build a stronger economy, to create new trading relationships with reliable trading partners, and to secure our borders.”

He further stated that Canada needs change that ‘builds the strongest economy in the G7’. He continued that Trump puts unjustified tariffs and that the Canadian government has ‘rightly retaliated.’

Carney pointed out, “The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country.” He then added that Canada will never be a part of America.

As the next PM, he will face harrowing challenges. President Donald Trump remarked that he wants to make Canada the “51st state,” and has imposed 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods.

It’s expected that Carney will be sworn in the following days.

Who is Mark Carney?

Carney, 59, is a newcomer to the political scene.

He was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. He’s been married to economist Diana Fox since 1994, who he met at the University of Oxford. Together, they have four children.

Carney was credited for helping Canada avoid the most devastating effects of the global financial crisis in 2008 during his time as the governor of the Bank of Canada.

In 2013, Carney became the governor of the Bank of England and the very first non-British to hold the position. His economic background is expected to help Canada amidst its tumultuous trade war with the US.
