Many would argue that dogs are the best companions of man, even when shopping and doing leisurely activities, and we agree, fur-real! Sadly, not all places allow dogs, giving a ruff time for everyone—but there are many locations in Montreal that are dog-friendly!
In Montreal, there are some spots where you can do activities with your dog such as Brasseur de Mont Montréal, and Lachine Canal National Heritage Site. These spots are excellent for enjoying a walk and or playing frisbee with your dog.
La Fontaine Park, or Parc La Fontaine, and Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse are other great parks that accommodate dogs, with plenty of grassy areas for them to roll around in.
All of these are just some of the places that are great for dog activities since they provide them with plenty of space to exercise. Read on as we’ll go to other locations in Montreal that deserve a round of a paws for allowing dogs to have so much fun!
1. Dine and relax at Brasseur de Montréal

This restaurant in Montreal is one of my favourites, and happens to be one of the most dog-friendly places in town. The restaurant has an outdoor patio where you can sit down with your dog while enjoying some delicious food and drinks.
This restaurant is located on Saint Denis Street and has been open since 1877! The menu includes a wide variety of beers, delicious burgers and sandwiches as well as salads and soups.
This place is perfect because it has a large open area where dogs can run around without getting too close to customers or other dogs who might be nervous around them.
Tip: There are also water bowls available here, so you don’t have to worry about your dog getting thirsty while you’re there!
2. Take a stroll at Parc La Fontaine

Parc La Fontaine is one of my favourite spots in Montreal, so I love that it’s also a great place for dogs! It’s a very large park located right next to the St. Lawrence River.
There are many paths that run throughout the park, which make it easy for you to jog or walk your dog around without getting too tired yourself. The park also offers an off-leash area for dogs, so there’s plenty of room for your pup to run around and play fetch.
The Parc La Fontaine dog park is open year-round from dawn until dusk and offers two areas for dogs to run around: one for small dogs (under 15 pounds) and another for larger breeds.
Tip: Both areas are fenced in with double gates at either entrance so you can keep an eye on your pup while they romp around.
3. Hike at Mount Royal Park

Mount Royal Park is the highest point and one of the biggest parks in Montreal, covering over 710 acres (272 hectares). There are many picnic tables scattered around the park, as well as restaurants and cafes that also welcome your four-legged friend.
In fact, it’s actually higher than any other mountain within 100 miles! It’s open year round and there are no fees to enter and as long as your dog is on a leash, you can let him run free here!
Mount Royal Park has a lot of green space for your dog to explore at the park, including trails that can take you up Mount Royal itself if you’re up for a little hike!
If you want to take your dog on an adventure through the woods at night, this is also allowed in Mount Royal Park. Just make sure that you keep them on a leash so they don’t get lost or go running off when they smell something interesting along the way!
Tip: Aside from dogs, you’ll find lots of other animals in Mount Royal – especially racoons! While it may be tempting to give them food, remember that feeding wildlife is not permitted in the park.
4. Have a little swim at Parc de la Promenade-Bellerive

Parc de la Promenade-Bellerive is one of the most popular parks in town as it also has an outdoor swimming pool where you can actually take your dog for a swim. It was designed with families and dogs in mind, so it’s one of the best places to bring your pet.
The park is open year-round and has many different types of terrain, including paths, roads and wooded areas. It has many grassy areas for your dog to run around on, and there are also some dirt trails that go through woods with small hills and rocky areas.
Parc de la Promenade-Bellerive also offers several other types of recreation areas that are perfect for both you and your dog. There’s a tennis court as well as fitness areas that allow dogs on leashes to join in on the fun.
Tip: There are water bowls available so make sure that your dog has had its last drink before going there, otherwise they might get very thirsty while they’re playing around!
5. Have a picnic at Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse

Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse is a large park that’s perfect for active dogs and their owners. This park is located in Montreal’s Southwest borough and is perfect for a picnic with your dog.
There’s lots of shade and water features for them to play in, as well as trails if you want to take them out for a proper hike.
The park also has an off-leash area where you can let your pup run free without worrying about getting fined or having their collar ripped off by another dog.
Finally, the park is very clean and well maintained by the city, which makes me feel more comfortable letting my dog roam around on his own.
Tip: The park also has toilets and drinking fountains if your dog gets thirsty.
6. Eat healthy snacks at Barley: Cereal Bar

Barley Cereal Bar is a restaurant that offers both vegan and non-vegan food. This is a great place to hang out with your dog and enjoy a nice meal or snack.
They have a cereal bar that you can customise with different toppings and add-ons, like coconut flakes, chia seeds and granola. It’s also a great place to take your pet if you’re looking for something healthy for them to eat.
The owners of the restaurant are very friendly towards your dog, so you can be sure that they will not get hurt or harmed in any way while visiting the place.
In fact, many dog owners choose to bring their dogs along when they go out with their friends because they know how much fun their beloved pets will have at this place!
Tip: They offer organic food that’s free from preservatives and additives, so you know it’s good for your four-legged friend.
7. Get some dinner at Taverne Midway

This restaurant is a great place to go for lunch or dinner with your dog by your side. The restaurant has a great outdoor terrace, which means it’s perfect for dogs.
The outdoor area has a sectioned-off area for dogs to run around, as well as water bowls and waste bags provided by the establishment.
In addition, the staff and patrons are very friendly towards dogs, so it’s the perfect place to take your pup if you’re looking for a fun night out on the town.
If you want to take your dog on a walk before or after your meal, there is a public park nearby that allows dogs on leashes and has benches for resting after walking around.
Tip: We recommend bringing your dog for brunch or lunch on Sundays. There’s a special menu just for dogs, and it includes a variety of tasty treats.

The Lachine Canal National Historic Site is perfect for any dog lover who wants to have a fun day with their pet! The canal was built in 1825 to allow ships to bypass the rapids on the St. Lawrence River.
You’ll get to explore this beautiful natural area and see many different types of wildlife along your walk. It’s a great place for an afternoon stroll, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafés along its length where you can relax with your pet.
There are lots of different trails throughout the park, including paved paths that are perfect for strollers or wheelchairs as well as more rugged trails that are better suited for energetic dogs that enjoy running around.
Today, it has become an important green space for locals and tourists alike. It has also helped shape today’s landscape, as well as our relationship with nature.
Tip: There are no BBQs permitted on site but there are picnic tables available near the entrance gate where you can get water and ice cream cones from the food truck parked next door.

The Ritz-Carlton Montreal is one of the most expensive hotels in Montreal. It’s known as one of the best hotels in the city, and it has an excellent reputation for its service, amenities, and for being pet friendly.
The Ritz-Carlton has a dog park on its premises which is open to guests and non-guests alike. You can bring your dog along with you when you stay at this hotel and take advantage of their amenities.
They have a full service dog grooming and pet sitting services that will make you feel at home. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will make sure your pet is taken care of while you are away.
In addition, dogs can even enjoy the Ritz-Carlton Club Level where they can receive special treats like doggie cookies along with the other amenities that come with being a club level guest.
Tip: Ritz-Carlton also has a pet room service menu from which you can order food for your furry friends (including treats!).
10. Go on a date night with Fido at Maison Pepin

One of the best places in Montreal for bringing your dog is Maison Pepin. This restaurant has outdoor seating and allows dogs at their tables if they are well-behaved and leashed up properly.
The food at Maison Pepin is excellent, and they even offer a special menu for dogs! You can enjoy all sorts of treats for your dog while you’re there, including chicken wings, beef jerky, pigs in blankets and more.
The restaurant also has an open-air space for dogs to run around in, as well as an indoor play area with toys for dogs to enjoy.
The restaurant does not accept reservations so it can be hard to get a table during peak hours (dinner time). If you have trouble getting a table, try going during brunch or lunch instead!
Tip: They offer dog water bowls so that you can refill them as needed.
Basic Requirements When You Bring Dogs into Public Places
Montreal is a dog-friendly city. There are many parks, off-leash zones and areas where you can take your dog to play or to run.
However, there are some locations that have restrictions on where you can bring a dog.
Here are some of the basic requirements when you bring dogs into public places in Montreal:
Requirements for Bringing Dogs into Public Places in Montreal
- Your dog must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed with the city of Montreal.
- Dogs must wear a collar with ID tags at all times while in public, including on beaches, paths or other recreational areas where they may meet other dogs.
- You must keep your dog on a leash at all times especially if they weigh 20 kg or more. This is the law in Montreal and it applies to all public spaces, including parks, sidewalks and streets. (Unless the place has designated off-leash area)
- You must clean your dog’s poop at all times. Do not leave poop bags behind and throw it in a waste receptacle provided by the city (e.g., garbage cans).
- Your dog must be under control at all times, meaning that it cannot be barking or growling excessively, jumping on people or other animals, or running away from you.
With that said, it’s important for owners to know the rules regarding dogs in each area before taking their pets out for walks so they can avoid any potential problems.
