Pros

  • Worked as a family lawyer and employment law
  • Has an extensive labour rights background
  • Has guest appearances on TV and radio

Cons

  • Has relatively fewer years of professional experience
  • Only has a roadside parking area

Jonathan Dowhaluk is an attorney that has been practicing since 2018. Although he’s relatively new to the field, we think his employment as a family lawyer in two law firms in a short period suggests he has a rich experience in law; thus making him a solid choice!

Also, Dowhaluk specializes in workplace matters, such as terminations, human rights, labour relations, and harassment. Furthermore, before his professional career, he was a union activist for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

Overall, we think those skill sets are advantageous for clients, particularly employees, with cases related to labour disputes.

Meanwhile, having an approachable and responsive attorney eases off a client facing a stressful case. From our surveys, many of his clients like his professional attitude.

And for us, it’s a relief that these are the characteristics Dowhaluk possesses.

Currently, Dowhaluk is a lawyer at Taylor Janis LLP, which was established in 2014 and focuses on employment law.

We think this particular firm is trustworthy because, aside from their great track record, its lawyers are occasionally featured on TV and radio programs to discuss various legal matters.

Lastly, Taylor Janis LLP is at Plaza 124, which is a relief because it’s a minute away from a bus station. However, we noticed that parking in the building could be difficult during peak office hours because it only has a shared roadside parking area.

Pros

  • Specializes in four areas of law
  • Has a background in business management
  • Operating since 1959
  • Provides 23 other law services

Cons

  • Has relatively fewer years of professional experience
  • Only has a roadside parking area

With its different areas of expertise, Philip Prowse is a solid choice in court–especially if the nature of your case overlaps. We thought so because aside from employment law, he specializes in intellectual property, estate, commercial, and general litigation.

Apart from that, it’s also worth noting that Prowse has a background in business management. It’s convenient for employers since their lawyer understands what’s best for them as a commercial entity.

Additionally, Prowse has been a legal practitioner since 2013. In our books, lawyers working for a decade have skill sets advantageous for all sorts of cases because of their years of experience.

And it’s a relief that clients of Prowse are satisfied with his legal services. Most of them said that his insightful, honest, yet compassionate approach put them at ease during the emotionally burdening times.

Prowse is a partner of Prowse Chowne LLP, which is at the Phipps-McKinnon Building. Aside from being in an easy-to-spot building, its location is advantageous for transit users since it’s near the Central and Churchill Station.

Moreover, we think it’s worth sharing that the law firm has been operating since 1959. For us, its decades of operation are a good sign that the legal services it has been providing have been satisfactory and consistent for generations of clients.

Sadly, parking at Prowse Chowne LLP could be a bit of a headache. Upon our observation, its shared roadside parking area is small and limiting during peak office hours.

Pros

  • Expertise in employment law
  • Compassionate representation
  • Versatile fee arrangements

Cons

  • Do not represent unionized employees

Abougoush Law stands out as a premier employment law firm in Alberta, dedicated to safeguarding the rights of individuals facing wrongful dismissal and other employment disputes. The firm’s managing partner, Omar Abougoush, along with his expert team, offers comprehensive legal services, including wrongful dismissal, constructive dismissal, and human rights complaints. Their mission is to provide compassionate, expert representation to ensure clients receive the justice and compensation they deserve.

We like that the firm’s lawyers possess a deep understanding of employment law, enabling them to secure improved severance packages and fair treatment for clients. Their expertise in navigating the complexities of wrongful dismissal cases ensures that clients receive the best possible outcomes.

Furthermore, the firm’s lawyers prioritize transparent communication and personalized guidance, ensuring clients feel supported and informed throughout the legal process. Testimonials from clients highlight the firm’s dedication, professionalism, and ability to achieve favorable results. However, there are some potential drawbacks to consider. One is that, as a boutique firm, there are limited options when it comes to your choice of lawyer.

In conclusion, Abougoush Law is a leading choice for individuals facing wrongful dismissal and other employment disputes in Alberta. Their deep expertise, client-centric approach, and commitment to justice make them a trusted partner for navigating complex legal issues.

Pros

  • In practice since 2004
  • An award-winning lawyer
  • Provides real estate, estate, commercial, and corporate legal services
  • Details about legal fees are on website
  • Has free on-site parking
  • Near several bus stops

Cons

  • Skills and experience are not tailored for employees

Philip Lopatka is a solo practitioner who started in 2004. His ability to take cases as the sole barrister speaks volume about his consistency and capability as a lawyer–which is always a plus factor.

Meanwhile, Lopatka’s specialty is on corporate, employment, real estate, and estate law. This, in our experience, would be beneficial for employers looking for an attorney since these fields of law are related to business.

On the same note, we think it’s reassuring for business owners to find that the Global Law Experts and Corporate International have recognized Lopatka’s expertise in corporate law.

However, Lopatka’s skill set and experience would not be a go-to for employees looking for an attorney. Nevertheless, he is still a solid recommendation in our books.

Lopatka’s firm, the Lopatka Law, is at the Windermere Plaza. After several visits, what we like the most about its location is the free on-site parking, huge parking area, and proximity to several bus stops.

Another thing we like about the firm is its gesture to post the details about the types of legal fees it accepts. It’s a convenient aspect that removes a lot of guesswork from clients.

With that said, many of Lopatka’s clients like his honest and no-nonsense attitude as a lawyer. Time and money are precious in legal matters, and we think having a straightforward attorney would make things more efficient.

Pros

  • Specializes in four areas of law
  • Renders pro bono legal services
  • Notable cases are available on the website
  • Near several bus stops
  • Has a huge parking area

Cons

  • Other commitments may cause incompatibilities with schedules

With experience in all court levels in Alberta and appellate advocacy, there is no doubt that Vik Mall is one of the lawyers in the city with a solid legal background. This is all the more impressive if we take into account that he only started his practice in 2013.

Aside from that, Mall volunteers as a pro bono lawyer. We think his volunteering is noteworthy because it sends the idea that he is passionate about his work, effectively making him a reliable attorney.

On the flip side, his other commitments may cause his unavailability and incompatibility with clients’ schedules at certain times. Although this is not a big deal, we think this is something worth noting if you are a busy bee.

As a lawyer, Mall’s specialty revolves around commercial, employment, real estate, and construction matters. With that said, his repertoire is advantageous for employers and employees alike.

One of his cases involved a successful defence (as a co-counsel) of an employer against a wrongful dismissal action. Mall’s other notable cases are available on his firm’s website, which is a convenient feature for clients.

Speaking of which, Mall works at the Kahane Law Office. We think the firm is a reputable and all-rounder institution because the company has been around since 2004 and offers ten types of legal services.

It’s also worth mentioning that the firm’s location is near several bus stops, which is good news for people visiting via transit. And if you are using your vehicle, you would have zero worries about parking because it has a serviceable parking area.

Lastly, Mall is well-received because of his thoroughness in explaining every detail of the case. Being prepared in legal matters is vital, and having a lawyer with these qualities is definitely reassuring for us!

Pros

  • Specializes in four areas of law
  • Provides free consultation
  • Has a spacious parking area

Cons

  • A relatively younger law firm
  • Has fewer areas of specialization

Faye Garries is an Edmontonian lawyer specializing in employment law, insurance disputes, personal injury, and professional negligence. Her wide range of skill sets is preferable for both employers and employees.

Furthermore, Garries has been in practice since 2010. With over a decade of experience, we think she has ample experience and a solid grasp of the best solution for her clients.

We also like that Garries is known for her concise, direct, yet friendly approach, which is why her clients are at ease during meetings. It’s a relief since having an attorney that can provide a comfortable space would make her clients less emotionally stressed.

Notably, Garries is working at the Smith Thompson Law LLP, a firm that specializes in four areas of law.

Although this firm is younger, having been established in 2018, and has fewer services than others, we think it’s still worth a shot because of its free consultation and contingency plans.

Nevertheless, the firm’s location at the Allendale Centre East, is ideal for people riding public transportation because it’s a few minutes away from a bus stop at Allendale Road.

But if you plan to go drive there, we’re glad to share that the complex has a spacious parking area. On top of that, there are numerous parking spots for PWD, which is a welcoming feature for visitors with special needs.
