Zen Math is founded by Danielle Theodoropoulos, a high school math teacher of 19 years, with an honours degree in mathematics and a bachelor of education. She has extensive experience, not only in the classroom but also in tutoring students one-on-one. It’s during these sessions she realized the way to nurture math fluency is through a collection of connected approaches, which primarily focus on the simplicity of content delivery and a rinse-and-repeat system to learning math. Zen Math was birthed because she was not aligned with the typical walk-in and walk-out 1-hour weekly sessions of tutoring.
Zen Math is designed and dedicated to simplifying math learning for students. Danielle personally trains all tutors to use her 3-step framework, emphasizing how to learn math, not just math itself. The company promotes a growth mindset and prioritizes student wellness and mental health, recognizing their crucial role in academic success. Her tutors are not only math experts but also role model individuals who are mentoring students through their math journey.
Embedded in the Zen Math Tutoring Program are sessions dedicated to training students how to complete homework at an exceptional level, how to study, how to analyze their tests, and practice time management skills by having tutors lead in the creation of study schedules. Danielle is determined to help as many students as possible, so she has created online drop-in sessions for only $20 so tutoring can truly be accessible to lower-income families.
Danielle does not require contracts, as her ultimate goal is to reduce students’ dependency on tutoring. Students are encouraged to end sessions when they feel confident and ready to do so. She also provides online prep courses so students can enhance their math learning between math classes and they perfectly align with the Ontario curriculum.
As an added benefit, Zen Math tutors are proficient in a variety of subjects, including physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and English. Many of our tutors have graduated from AP high school programs and are well-equipped to provide tutoring at this advanced level.

Parents appreciate the freedom from rigid contracts, allowing them to stop sessions anytime. Regular progress updates and direct tutor engagement with parents keep families informed and involved in their child’s education.
However, one potential drawback of The STEM Spot Tutoring is the reliance on virtual sessions, which may not be ideal for every student. Pros
- Offers online and in-person tutoring
- Has summer and group sessions
- Helps students boost confidence
- Excellent track record
Cons
- Slightly pricier rates
We think The Math Guru has an impressive track record of enhancing their students’ math performance. From what we’ve gathered, elementary to Grade 12 students show noticeable improvements in overall grades and semester performance.
We also found it neat that besides regular private and group tutoring, they offer summer programs, exam parties, workshops, and even course credits. They make sure every student can join in on the fun.
Furthermore, we appreciate that they’ve got you covered with both online and in-person tutoring. In our books, it’s a game-changer, giving you the flexibility to snag those extra lessons without leaving the comfort of home—perfect for when in-person meet-ups are a bit of a hassle.
Also, students and parents shared with us that their scores shot up, and they’re feeling more confident in answering questions and socializing with their peers. We like how this holistic improvement makes for a better academic experience for the students.
However, note that their rates are a tad on the higher side. We learned that private tutoring will set you back $80 an hour, a smidge more than the industry average of about $70.
Overall, we’re pretty sold on The Math Guru. With their track record and all the thumbs-up from students, it seems like a rock-solid choice for boosting your math skills and confidence.

Pros
- Easy and flexible scheduling
- Has a large team of tutors
- Has worked with over 1267 students
- Offers online and in-person tutoring
Cons
- Group sessions must include students enrolled in the same course
What we like most about Miss Math Tutoring is that they’re highly accommodating and flexible in setting a schedule for the classes. From our surveys, this was quite the praise amongst parents busy between their jobs and juggling taking their kids to math lessons.
We also think their flexibility is possible since they have 21 tutors on the roster; thus, students are easily matched with a tutor. Plus, we like that they provide Grade 1 to 12 math and science lessons for online and in-person tutoring.
Another thing we found impressive is that they’ve successfully guided over 1200 students, and many excelled not only in math but science subjects post-completion.
This aspect also shows us that their customized lesson plans and teaching techniques are efficient and well-received by their students.
But we’re a bit bummed that group sessions must include students enrolled in the same course and learning the same material. So, if you’re flying solo and eyeing those group sessions, you might need to play matchmaker with your classmates first.
Regardless, we have to give props to Miss Math Tutoring after hearing students mention how these tutors turn math lessons into a legit good time instead of something to dread.

Pros
- Great for long-term tutoring plans
- Has over 1,100 Mathnasium centres in North America
- Works with struggling and advanced students
Cons
- No rates available online
Next on our list is Mathnasium. We’re glad that whether you’re a math whiz or struggling to crack the code, they’re open to all types of students.
On that note, kudos to Mathnasium for being all about personalized learning. Instead of throwing everyone into one study group, they tailor the lesson plan based on each student’s capacity and the concepts they need to work on.
For instance, many parents have told us about the impressive report card upgrades they’ve seen in their kids. Most students have also talked about feeling more confident in tackling math problems and having fun in class.
Moreover, we noticed that they have many students who’ve been continuing their classes with them for years – we’re talking over six years for some. For us, this is a testament to their consistent quality tutoring and a reflection that students learn and benefit from them.
We also think it’s noteworthy that they have over 1,100 Mathnasium centres in North America, which means you can pick the one closest to your doorstep for that extra convenience. You can also opt for their online classes if that works best.
Lastly, we learned that their rates aren’t available online, but word on the streets is that they’re also not the cheapest. But if you’re in it for the long haul and looking for quality, we say it’s a reliable pick.

Pros
- Has affordable rates
- Produces excellent progress and results
- Skilled and patient tutors
Cons
- Doesn’t tutor K to Grade 2 levels
- Only has 2 tutors
One thing that caught our eye about NextGen Math Academy is its outstanding reputation for producing noticeable improvements in just six to eight weeks of tutoring. Plus, we like that their subjects are math-related, from physics to mental math, calculus, and vectors.
To give you an idea, a student who kicked off with a 70 in math skyrocketed to a 94 in Grade 12 Advanced Functions after weeks at NextGen Math Academy. Now, that’s a clear and impressive jump from his previous grade, proving their approach is the real deal.
And given their level of tutoring, we’re pleasantly surprised to know that their rates are cheaper than most on this list. You can anticipate paying around $25 for grades 3 to 10, a bit over $40 for high-level tutoring, and even less for small group classes—quite the steal.
On the downside, the lowest level they tutor is grade 3, and we’re quite iffy that they only have two tutors to handle all students. We think it limits them to be more flexible with their schedules, especially if you have a specific schedule you want to follow.
Despite that, we’ve got to give it to NextGen Math Academy – those two tutors are bringing some serious expertise to the table. Several parents and students shared that their skills and patience in tackling questions and different pacing are on point.
9. Kamaris Math Tutoring

Pros
- Offers reasonable rates
- Has a good reputation
- Experienced and patient tutors
Cons
- Has a small team
A standout about Kamaris Math Tutoring is its strong reputation for effectively improving students. We’re also impressed that over 90% of their students pursue university studies, and they mostly rake in students via referrals.
We also like that they offer different tutoring programs tailored to each goal, including a results-driven program to cover concepts for upcoming exams. For us, this is a treat for those looking to boost their exam scores or catch up on missed lessons.
Based on our research, we found that their team of tutors has 20 years of math tutoring experience and a university degree in mathematics.
Impressively, they also have experience dealing with schools from across Toronto and Ontario programs, including IB, MaST, TOPS, and AP.
However, we think it’s a shame that Kamaris Math Tutoring is working with a small team. Unfortunately, they can’t accept a large number of students at once.
On the bright side, they’re giving these classes at a fair rate, running from $20 to $55 per hour. Students can team up with their buddies in groups of two to four, levelling up their math skills and divvying up the costs.
All in all, Kamaris Math Tutoring is great for students needing or wanting to improve their math performance while still sticking to an affordable budget.
