What is Abraham Lake’s history?

Abraham Lake came to life when they built the Bighorn Dam in the ’70s. Fun fact: they named it after Silas Abraham, a local from back in the 1800s, thanks to a naming contest by the Alberta government.

It’s located in the Canadian Rockies, by the North Saskatchewan River in Northern Alberta. This lake is no slouch—it’s a whopping 54 square kilometers, stretches 32 kilometers, and sits 1,340 meters above sea level.

What’s neat is that even though it’s man-made, it rocks that gorgeous turquoise vibe you see in other Rocky Mountain lakes. Sunlight bouncing off rock flour in the water, they say.

When Is The Best Time To Visit

 If you’re into photography, winter’s the prime time to hit up Abraham Lake because when it freezes over, you get these wild methane bubbles trapped under the ice—picture-perfect stuff, seriously. 

And the whole scene, with Abraham Mountain and Mount Michener in the background, turns into this dreamy winter wonderland.

For the bubble magic, your best bet is usually January to February, depending on how chilly it’s feeling that year.

Now, during the summer, the Abraham Lake zone is a hiker’s dream. There are the Saskatchewan Glacier Trail, Kinglet Lake, and Siffleur Falls trails, each with its own vibe and killer views of the lake and the awesome scenery around it.

How to Get Around

Train: There is no direct train service to Abraham Lake. The nearest major train stations are in larger cities like Edmonton or Calgary, from where you would need to find alternative transportation to the lake.

Bus: The most straightforward option involves taking a bus from Calgary and then switching to a taxi for the remainder of the journey to Abraham Lake. This combined method takes approximately 5 hours and 38 minutes.

Another route includes taking a bus to Banff and then catching a taxi from Banff to Abraham Lake. This journey is slightly longer, taking about 6 hours and 23 minutes.

Taxi: Taxis can be used for the journey, but this could be quite expensive, especially if you’re traveling from a distant city. Taxis are more feasible for shorter distances, such as from nearby towns or accommodation areas to the lake.

Car Rental: Numerous car rental agencies are available at the Calgary International Airport and throughout the city. Companies like Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and Budget offer a range of vehicles to suit different needs and budgets. 

What to Do at Abraham Lake Camping (Top Tips for the Best Camping Experience) 

Look for the best site to camp 

Finding the perfect campsite around Abraham Lake is an adventure in itself, as these stunning spots don’t require reservations. It’s a good idea to allow yourself ample time to explore and choose your ideal site without feeling rushed.

To locate a campsite, follow the David Thompson Highway for about 25 minutes past the Saskatchewan River Crossing, keeping an eye out for well-defined dirt paths on the right. These paths, leading off the highway and into the trees, are your gateway to the campsites.

Our experience involved driving along the highway until we spotted a promising path—we first explored it on foot to ensure it was suitable before heading down. After a bit of searching, we discovered a beautiful row of campsites near the water, making our efforts well worth it!

Go hiking to see wonderful views 

Hiking around Abraham Lake is a rewarding experience, offering a mix of serene landscapes and rugged wilderness. The area caters to all levels of hikers, from those seeking a leisurely walk along the lake to adventurers aiming for challenging mountain ascents. 

The trails boast stunning views of the lake’s turquoise waters and the Canadian Rockies, providing a perfect backdrop for wildlife encounters and photography, especially of the unique winter methane bubbles.

When planning a hike, it’s essential to be prepared for the unpredictable weather. Dressing in layers and being ready for sudden changes, particularly at higher elevations, is key. 

Safety is paramount, so always inform someone of your hiking plans, carry a map or GPS, and don’t forget bear spray. These precautions ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience in this wildlife-rich area.

  • Rainbow Trout: These vibrant fish are a favorite among anglers for their fighting spirit.

And if you’re new to climbing or bringing along the kids, don’t worry—Via Ferrata David Thompson offers guided tours. These are great for getting a feel for rock climbing in a safe, structured way, plus you get to soak in some amazing views while you’re at it.

Have a wonderful picnic with your friends and family 

Abraham Lake Corridor has several Provincial Day-use Areas, perfect for a relaxed picnic. These spots are well-equipped with essentials like fire pits, picnic tables, and washrooms, not to mention the stunning views they offer.

Up north, by the lake, you’ll find Fish Lake PRA. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal by the water and then stroll along the shoreline trail. 

If you’re up for a more dramatic backdrop, Crescent Falls PRA is your go-to. Here, you can have a picnic near a powerful waterfall and explore a vast valley with numerous trails.

For those heading to the lake’s southern end, Thompson Creek is a must-visit. It’s a charming spot for creekside camping and trails leading to the North Saskatchewan River, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

View wildlife and appreciate what nature has to offer

Exploring the secondary roads, Provincial Recreation Areas, or the river access routes near Abraham Lake can turn into an exciting wildlife spotting adventure right from your car. 

The area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, boasting a variety of large animals such as deer, moose, both black and grizzly bears, wild horses, marmots, and bighorn sheep.
