The camping sites are near Winnipeg Beach—perfect for hot summer days so you can quickly cool off with a dip in the lake and stroll on the boardwalk.

Meanwhile, the campground is designed with accessibility in mind, making it a walk in the park for everyone! You’ll find various convenient facilities, such as coin-operated showers, modern washrooms, picnic areas, and a recycling station.

For a quiet camping experience just an hour from downtown Winnipeg, St. Malo Provincial Park is a top choice. Overall, it’s a nice place to enjoy the sun, the beach, and the outdoors.

Since there are basic and serviced campgrounds, you can sleep in rental yurts (can fit up to five people) or your own tent or RV. The area for RVs has a vegetation barrier for each vehicle, making it more private—it’s easier to enjoy the fire pit!

This isn’t a remote spot, unlike other provincial parks in Canada, since this place also brings you close to a volleyball court, mini golf, and a playground. You can swim at the beach during the day or do water activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, or canoeing.

When you’re ready for a change of pace, you can take a short stroll through the park’s scenic, albeit few, trails.

Pro Tips:

St. Malo Provincial Park gets crowded, especially the beaches. Avoid weekends and holidays for a quieter time.

Since this is a provincial park, don’t forget to buy your vehicle permit online and print it! Once you’re inside, keep it in the windshield because your pass needs to be clearly displayed.

Its location in Ile des Chênes brings you close to modern comforts you won’t find in backcountry camping. You can visit grocery stores for last-minute purchases, local restaurants for body fuel, and gas stations for actual fuel.

Plus, it’s very close to various attractions in Winnipeg. Basically, you get the best of both worlds—tourist destinations on one side and a small-town feel on the other.

As for amenities, you don’t have to worry about anything! All camping sites have full hookups and you can go to the small tenting site if you want a more authentic camping feel.

Chesley’s Resort & Campground is a spot that gives you camping and outdoor activities without remote experience—perfect for finicky campers, eh? This seasonal camping site is for individuals and their pets who want to stay in their comfortable RVs and trailers.

This is where you go if you like the feel of a small community. There’s a decent selection of camping site options so you’ll be neighbours with fellow campers, including spots close to activities and a quieter space.

In the summer, this place goes nuts with activities! Cook-offs, fishing derbies, bingo, and karaoke? It’s like a tiny neighbourhood!

You won’t go hungry here, too! It’s one of the few campgrounds in Winnipeg that has a restaurant on-site—Canadian Thai meals for your cravings!

Pro Tip:

Book as early as you can because this campground tends to reach full capacity. You can join the waiting list if you don’t get a reservation.

Winnipegs Backcountry Camping Spots

Mantario Trail

Media credit: ccflz

Address: South Trailhead – MB-312, Whiteshell
Distance from Downtown: 156 km
Operating Season: Year-round (best time to visit is from April – October)
Facilities: Drop toilet, bear boxes, picnic areas, fire pits

For backcountry camping, you need to get away from Winnipeg first. One of our top spots that’s only a couple of hours from downtown is Mantario Trail, located in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

But be warned! This requires a very challenging hike, so we don’t recommend it to beginners. The trail is 63 km and is best for experienced hikers—it takes an average of 4 days to finish (or 5 if you’re slow like us).

Now, since this is pretty remote, you don’t get modern facilities—think: drop toilet and a small bear box. Yup, that’s it!

But the good news is the official campsites are easy to find along the trail. You can camp at Caribou Lake, Marion Lake, Peggy Lake, Olive Lake, and Moosehead Lake.

Pro Tip:

Pack light, but remember to bring all the essentials. This is a multi-day hike without grocery stores, so bring all the necessities and avoid unnecessary stuff.

Epinette Creek Trail

Address: Trailhead – South Cypress
Distance from Downtown: 189 km
Operating Season: Year-round (best time to visit is from March – September)
Facilities: Fireboxes, picnic tables, non-modern washrooms, cabins

Camping at Epinette Creek means you have to hike under the sun. You see, this isn’t the most shaded hike, so be ready to get cooked by the sun—just wear a sun hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunscreen, and you’ll be fine.

This is a loop trail on the northern side of Spruce Woods Provincial Park, which is made up of smaller paths—the whole trail system is actually 41 km long!

Don’t be overwhelmed because the official camping sites along the trail are fairly easy to spot. And since you want the backcountry experience, you’ll have to use non-modern washrooms.

The good news is you’ll find a water supply at the campgrounds. However, like most backcountry camping sites, these aren’t safe for drinking.

Pro Tip:

Download or print a map of the trail system to ensure you’re going in the right direction. This is composed of small trails, so it’s easy to lose your original route if you don’t know where to go.
