One time, my friends and I decided to take a little trip out of Toronto. We threw a bunch of places into a random name-picker wheel and hit go. Drum roll, please (pretend you have no idea)—OSHAWA!

Yep, it’s close enough for a quick getaway—no long, dreaded drive back. A little digging revealed that some of my friends were already pretty familiar with the area, so we had lots of options to explore. From parks to car museums, and laser tag, we found plenty to keep us busy.

Safe to say we had a blast. So, if you’re planning a trip, here’s a guide to the top things to do in Oshawa—from outdoor adventures and indoor activities to cultural stops and family-friendly fun. Read on!

Outdoor Activities in Oshawa

Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens

Although Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens is located in the middle of the city, it feels like a mini oasis. With winding pathways, charming bridges, and landscaped greenery, it’s especially famous for its stunning peony collection, which bursts into full bloom in late May and early June. 

Whether you’re looking for a nice solo walk, a romantic spot for a date, or a quiet place to read a book, this is it. Even beyond the peony season, it’s a lovely place to visit year-round.

Not to mention, lots of shaded spots to relax, a nearby creek that adds to the peaceful atmosphere, and walking paths that connect to other parks in the area. 

Pro tip:

Visit between late May and early June to see the peonies at their best—just be ready for a bit more foot traffic. If you’re aiming for a picnic, bring your own snacks since there aren’t many food options close by.

McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve is a fantastic spot for those who love hiking, birdwatching, or just getting lost in nature. Situated near Lake Ontario, this nature reserve is packed with scenic walking trails, boardwalks, and lookout points.

It’s home to a wide variety of birds, deer, and other wildlife, so if you’re a nature lover or photographer, bring your binoculars and camera. And it’s a good thing that the trails are mostly flat and easy to navigate, making them perfect for families, cyclists, or casual walkers looking for a scenic stroll. 

Also, there are a few hidden benches and rest areas. It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset over the lake—the colours reflecting on the water make for an incredible view.

Pro tip:

Bring bug spray, especially in the summer—mosquitoes here mean business. If you’re planning to visit in the fall, dress in layers since it can get breezy near the water.

If you’re looking to shake up your usual outdoor routine, Treetop Eco-Adventure Park is the perfect place. This isn’t just a walk in the woods—it’s a full-on obstacle course in the sky, with zip lines, bridges, rope swings, and aerial challenges to test your balance, strength, and nerve.

It’s also nice how they got the courses for all skill levels, so whether you’re a beginner or someone who’s basically Tarzan, you’ll find a challenge that suits you. The high ropes courses and zip lines are set in a forest, and you’ll get to see the stunning views of Oshawa.

But if heights aren’t your thing, you can just hop over to iBOUNCE, their trampoline park, for some low-altitude fun instead. Either way, you’re in for an unforgettable time.

Pro tip:

Wear gloves if you don’t want sore hands from gripping the ropes all day, and book your spot ahead of time—this place fills up fast, especially on weekends.

Oshawa Zoo & Fun Farm

Oshawa Zoo & Fun Farm isn’t your massive, big-city zoo, but that’s part of the charm. The vibe here is relaxed and interactive, with lots of opportunities to get up close with the animals.

You’ll find a mix of farm favourites like goats, llamas, and ponies, along with some more exotic residents like wallabies and emus—and the best part? Many of the animals are friendly and love to be hand-fed (bring some quarters for food dispensers!).

Just note that the zoo is open seasonally from spring to fall, usually from May to October, so plan accordingly. It’s perfect for younger kids, thanks to the open space and easy walking paths, and it never feels overwhelmingly busy.

Pro tip:

It’s best to bring cash for animal feed and snacks and try visiting earlier in the day when the animals are most active. Also, wear comfy shoes—there’s a lot of walking.

Canadian Automotive Museum

You don’t have to be a die-hard car enthusiast to appreciate what’s inside the Canadian Automotive Museum—though if you are, you’re in for a real treat. Housed in a historic 1920s car dealership, this place is packed with vintage, rare, and downright cool cars,

From the early 1900s electric cars (yes, electric cars existed back then) to Rolls-Royces and even vehicles used in wartime, there’s no shortage of fascinating pieces to check out. Even if you’re not big on cars, the history and craftsmanship behind them make for an engaging visit.

One of the best things about this museum is how up-close and personal you can get with the cars. No stuffy, roped-off displays here—just a two-story collection of beautifully preserved vehicles complete with interesting facts and quirky stories behind each one.

Pro tip:

If you’re bridging kids, there’s a small play area to keep them entertained while you explore.

Parkwood National Historic Site

Parkwood National Historic Site, once home to auto industry mogul R.S. McLaughlin, is a stunning, well-preserved estate. 

This mansion has been featured in several movies and TV shows—Anne with an E, Umbrella Academy, and X-Men are notable examples. Once you step inside, it’s easy to see why it belongs to the silver screen.

Outdoors and indoors, it’s filled with luxury, history, and Hollywood-level charm straight from the early 1900s. Its architecture is of the Beaux-Arts style, taking inspiration from European chateaux and villas.

But what made it even more interesting is that it also incorporates Art Moderne, Art Deco, and Classic Revival features, blending them all into this dreamy mansion that we can’t get enough of.

The grand staircase is a great photo-op, and you can just imagine the gatherings that took place in the lavish dining rooms.The perfectly manicured gardens feel like a scene from The Great Gatsby. 

For a bit of mystery, the estate also has hyphen tunnels, an impressive art collection, and beautiful sunrooms overlooking the gardens. 

Pro tip:

Visit in the summer when the gardens are in full bloom—it feels like stepping into a European palace. If you’re a movie buff, ask the tour guide about the Hollywood productions filmed here—it’s been in everything from X-Men to Murdoch Mysteries. 

Oshawa Museum

Oshawa Museum is tucked away in Lakeview Park, this museum gives a fascinating look at Oshawa’s past through three preserved 19th-century homes. Each house tells a different story—from the lives of early settlers to Oshawa’s Indigenous history.

The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and bring the stories to life, making it feel less like a museum visit and more like stepping back in time.

Since it’s located right by the lake, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon outing. Take a tour, then wander the waterfront trails, have a picnic, or just enjoy the scenery.

Canadian Tank Museum / Ontario Regiment Museum

You don’t have to be a history nerd to be blown away by the Ontario Regiment Museum (also called the Canadian Tank Museum). 

This place is home to one of the largest collections of operational military vehicles in North America, meaning these tanks, jeeps, and armoured vehicles aren’t just for display—they actually run!

The best part of the experience? Tank Saturdays. On these special event days, they fire up the vehicles and put on a live demonstration, complete with driving maneuvers and historical commentary.

Even on regular days, the collection itself is impressive, and the staff (many of whom are veterans) are always happy to share stories and knowledge.

Pro tip:

They offer tank driving experiences—but book well in advance because they sell out fast. Also, it’s a good idea to bring ear protection if you’re visiting on Tank Saturday.

For a day of good old-fashioned family fun, NEB’s Fun World is a one-stop shop for entertainment. This place is way bigger than it looks from the outside—it has bowling, go-karts, laser tag, arcade games, and even a three-level play structure for kids.

Whether you’re visiting with little ones or looking for a fun activity with friends, there’s no shortage of things to do here. The bowling alley is one of the biggest in the region, with both traditional and mini bowling lanes.

On top of that, the go-kart track is surprisingly fast, making it a favourite for anyone looking for a little friendly competition. There’s also a massive arcade with both modern and retro games, plus a snack bar to refuel between activities.

Pro tip:

Check their website for discount days and special promotions—bowling and arcade credits can be much cheaper at certain times. If you’re coming on a weekend, go early to avoid long wait times for the go-karts. 

Linton’s Farm Market

We’re glad that the lanes are well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and the prices are pretty reasonable—making it a great hangout spot for families, groups of friends, or even a casual date night.

What sets this place apart is the fair pricing—it’s one of those local gems where you don’t have to break the bank to have a good time. They’ve got both 5-pin and 10-pin bowling, so you can switch it up depending on your preference.

Pro tip:

Go during their weekday specials for cheaper games, and if you’re coming with a group, call ahead to reserve a lane—it can get busy on weekends.
